Argyronisos Private Island Greece
The same family has owned this island in Greece's northern Aegean since 1961, and for over sixty years, ownership meant restraint rather than development. Argyronisos, also called Silver Island, spans 60 acres of the Gulf of Pteleos off northern Evia, holding eleven stone structures that total just over 10,000 square feet: a main residence, a two-story villa, several guesthouses, and the chapel of Agioi Anargyroi, set among cypress groves and an organic olive grove of centuries-old trees. The island runs entirely on solar power and a backup generator, with no cable or utility line to the mainland. Coves and private beaches ring the shoreline, and a deep-water dock and helipad are the only ways in: a boat from Athens takes three and a half hours, a helicopter about 50 minutes. The Sporades archipelago, including Skiathos and Skopelos, sits within sailing distance, putting the island close to one of the Mediterranean's premier sailing grounds without giving up its privacy.
