After COVID-19 put a halt on face-to-face socializing, people began looking for new ways to connect. Enter Clubhouse. The audio-based app taps into an underutilized iPhone feature — voice chat — to create chatrooms where members actually audibly chat. Rooms are organized by topics including business, music, and societal issues, and each one has a moderator, allowing users to host their own conversations while controlling the audience participation. While access to the experience is currently invite-only — invites are going for nearly $100 on eBay, and the current user list is a who's who of the wealthy and influential — the social media app has managed to already surpass 8 million downloads less than a year after its release.
