David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring

Sixteen of David Hockney's iPad drawings from The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 are heading to auction, all from a single private collection, appearing at auction for the first time. Hockney created the series between January and June 2011 along Woldgate, a country road outside Bridlington, making 94 drawings before editing them down to 51, chronicling the East Yorkshire landscape shifting from winter into spring with vivid color and spontaneity. The iPad proved the perfect solution for working en plein air in the cold, letting him sketch quickly as light shifted and refine the works later in his studio. Each drawing is printed in color on wove paper at 55 by 41.5 inches, issued in editions of 25 and signed in pencil by the artist. A first group of 17 works from the same collection sold at Sotheby's last October, totaling $8.4 million against a low estimate of $2.3 million.
