In Japan, Noyaki is the controlled field burning of the grasslands in Aso. The process has taken place yearly for over a thousand years and leaves the once lush landscape scorched and blackened, preventing the verdant hillsides from being overtaken by brush and shrubs. Inspired by the tradition, FIL has created the Mass Series Sumi Furniture. The collection includes a selection of clean, minimal pieces made from blackened steel frames and roasted cedar as a reference to the Noyaki. Black fabric on the dining and lounge chairs finish off the monochromatic look.
