Johnny Carson's 1981 DeLorean DMC-12

Comedic and late-night legend Johnny Carson wasn't the most prolific car collector in Hollywood. Carson owned a fer Mercedes SLs, and his pride and joy was a restored 1939 Chrysler Royal sedan that belonged to his father — and entrusted to Jay Leno after he passed. Carson did have an outsize interest in John DeLorean and his company, however, investing $500,000 and getting an early production DMC-12 as a result. That car, chassis no. 2439, is now up for auction. The car arrived from Ireland at the Port of Long Beach, and Carson immediately took the car for a drive — having to be rescued by the fire department after the car's battery died on the highway and the electrical system couldn't open the doors. DeLorean Motor Company completed a six-month restoration of the DMC-12 earlier in 2023, and car shows 89,680 miles on the odometer. Act fast: one day is left in the auction.
