NASA Mars Helicopter

It won't be carrying people — or much of anything else — but that doesn't mean the NASA Mars Helicopter isn't important. The result of four years of development, it's a proof-of-concept that is designed to overcome the difficulties of the Martian atmosphere. As such, it weighs just under four pounds, yet has twin counter-rotating blades that spin 10 times faster than their Earthly counterparts. It will travel to the Red Planet aboard the 2020 Mars rover and will perform various autonomous flights in hopes that if successful, future versions can serve as bird's eye scouts for land-based missions.
