Richard Petty's 1970 Plymouth Superbird Hardtop
Arguably the most iconic American muscle car of all time, this 1970 Superbird had was owned by none other than The King — Richard Petty. The NASCAR legend owned the car from 1983 to 2013, the only production Superbird he ever possessed. Under the hood is a 440 cubic-inch Super Commando V8 backed by an A727 automatic transmission and 3.55 Sure Grip rear end. 1,935 Superbirds were built over 90 days in late 1969 to homologate the parts — nose cone, rear wing, rear window, and air extractors on the front fenders — for the Grand National racing series. Inside are optional black bucket seats with console and floor shifter, Road Runner horn center, and a personal message and Petty autograph on the dash pad. The car goes to auction January 18th at Mecum's Kissimmee event.
