Stodig Arctic Lifeboat

Originally built as a marine lifeboat in 1997 and designed to carry 100 people in a survival situation, two architects purchased this yellow vessel and breathed new life into it. The pair took about a year to convert the lifeboat, adding two double cabins, bunk beds for guests, a kitchen, sitting area, and bathroom. The roof was fitted with solar panels and the original tarpaulin was replaced with curved windows while the original rear structure was jettisoned in favor of a new plywood and fiberglass cockpit. The boat was named Stødig which is a Norwegian term for sound and steadfast and has been the headquarters for its owners on their voyage to the Arctic. Their journey is the subject of an upcoming film that explores the expedition and everyday challenges.
