The Original Hermès Birkin Bag
It famously started on an Air France flight, when Jane Birkin, speaking with Hermès director Jean-Louis Dumas, bemoaned the lack of a bag big enough to handle her daily life. Dumas pledged to make one for her, and the Birkin bag was born. Now a cultural icon, it's seen many permutations and imitations over the years, but they can all trace their roots back to the 1985 original. Now that legendary prototype, bearing Birkin's initials and with unique traits from the models that followed, is up for auction. Notably, the bag has the height of a Birkin 35 but the depth of a Birkin 40, a non-removable shoulder strap, gilded brass hardware, and inside, the nail clipper that Jane kept hanging from the bag's strap. The bag will be on display at locales around the world ahead of its auction as part of Sotheby's Fashion Icons sale on July 10.
