In Praise of 16mm

Crack open a PBR and prepare yourself — it's about to get extremely hipster in here. You hear plenty of people talk about the joy of real 35mm and 65mm film, but this video essay is a love letter to that lesser-appreciated sibling, 16mm. The camera shake, the grain, the under- or oversaturated color — 16mm is the rose-tinted goggles of an era you didn't live through.

  • The Hitman's Bodyguard

    Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson meet up outside the Marvel Universe, and it looks like there's going to be plenty of action, comedy, and Motherf*ckers. The former is sent as a bodyguard for the latter in a strange world where Samuel L. Jackson needs protection. Yeah, he doesn't think so either, and that's why Reynolds ends up chasing Jackson through a series of gunfire, car chases, and explosions, all set to Whitney Houston's "'I Will Always Love You." Also starring Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek, the modern-day Bodyguard is slated for release August 18, 2017.

  • Building an iPhone From Scratch

    In China, there are entire markets devoted to cell phone parts — not surprising when nearly every component is manufactured and assembled there. Formerly a programmer from Silicon Valley, Scotty of Strangeparts wondered if he could build an iPhone 6S from parts found at the market. It took a while to finish, but finish he did — with a working iPhone made from about $300 in second-hand and refurbished components.
