The Last Ice Merchant of Chimborazo
For over 50 years, Baltazar Ushca Tenesaca has been keeping this 500-year-old tradition alive. Twice a week, he makes the 16 mile trek up Ecuador's tallest mountain to harvest 60 pound ice rocks from the glaciers. Due to the low demand, Baltazar is the only harvester left on Chimborazo but continues the practice for the ice's unique properties.
