Toyota AE86 Concepts

While the Toyota Corolla has long been associated with reliable — albeit rather boring — transportation in the US, the Sprinter Trueno helped launch the "hot hatch" phenomenon along with its i-country rival, the Honda Civic. Immortalized in the Initial D anime series, the AE86 — the internal code for the front-engine/rear-drive fifth-generation Corolla — has been given a new lease on life with the AE86 H2 concept from Toyota. The AE86 H2 retains the inline-four but is powered by a Mirai hydrogen fuel cell with modified fuel injectors, lines, and spark plugs. Toyota kitted the original AE86 out Initial D-style, with a roll cage, Bride racing seats, and graphics from the show. Another AE86 was shown as a full BEV, with a Tundra Hybrid electric motor and Prius battery. Toyota plans to develop the conversion kits further and offer them for sale.
