1970 Le Mans Porsche 917 K Race Car

When Steve McQueen signed on to star in the film Le Mans in 1971, the actor insisted on making the movie as close to the real thing as possible. A racer himself, McQueen's co-star in Le Mans was none other than this 1970 Porsche 917 K — footage of the car in action was taken at the famous 24-hour race for the film. Driven by David Hobbs and Mike Hailwood, the car ran as high as third before an accident in the rain claimed it. The car was rebuilt by Porsche and raced for three more seasons before being retired in 1974. The current owner paid for a no-expense-spared restoration to its original Le Mans Gulf livery by expert Paul Lanzant, and the historic car will go to auction in Monterey in August.
