Ferrari Prototype Collection
Before any Ferrari becomes a classic, it is first a prototype. Going to auction at Mecum's Monterey Car Week event is a series of prototypes used to develop the LaFerrari hypercar and the F12tdf grand touring machine. Development for the LaFerrari progressed through three phases, with the first represented by the 2011 M4. The car served as a test mule for emissions controls and was modified from the 458 Italia to accept the LaFerrari's drivetrain. Phase two was the 2012 M1, with a preproduction carbon fiber chassis and tub, representing the final layout of the production car. Phase three came with the PS1, carrying the Type F140FE V-12 engine, a preproduction HY-KERS hybrid system, and final production bodywork. The 2014 F12tdf car represents the pinnacle of Ferrari's front-engine grand touring development, with a history that stretches back over 70 years.
