Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept

In the early 1970s Hyundai was just getting its start, and there were no vehicle design firms in Korea. As such, it tapped Italian firm GFG Style, and specifically, founder Giorgetto Giugiaro, to create its first independent, world-market cars. Among them was the Pony Coupe, which made its debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1974. Unfortunately due to the harsh economic climate of the time, it never made it into production — although its design did serve as inspiration for one of Giugiaro's more famous designs, the DeLorean DMC 12. Approaching the Pony Coupe's 50th anniversary, Hyundai has teamed with Giugiaro and his son Fabrizio to recreate the original concept. The recreation was recently shown at an event in Lake Como, Italy, and stays true to the original with a distinctive angular design, a lower-than-a-Corvette height, a period-correct interior, and floating driver-focused gauges.
