London Tunnels

Set deep beneath Chancery Lane tube station, London's mile-long Kingsway Exchange Tunnels were built in the 1940s as a shelter from WWII's Blitz bombings. In the years following, they housed MI6's top-secret Special Operations Executive, believed to be the basis for "Q Branch" in the James Bond series, and also housed the "hotline" between the White House and Kremlin during the Cold War. Long since decommissioned, the tunnels are set to undergo a $268 million renovation led by architectural firm Wilkinson-Eyre, creating the London Tunnels public attraction. While potential uses have yet to be set in stone, it would likely include historical exhibits, a fictional "Q Branch" area, and a reimagining of London's deepest licensed bar, opened by British Telecom during its stay in the tunnels and located 40 meters underground. The development team is set to hold a series of open-door events to explain their plans and hear feedback before a planning application is submitted in November.
