Mercedes Gleitze's 1927 Rolex Oyster Watch
On October 7, 1927, Mercedes Gleitze became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Two weeks later, she set off to defend her record in what became known as "Vindication Swim". She had to stop her attempt after 10 hours, but the Rolex Oyster she was wearing survived. As proof that its waterproof case worked as advertised, the feat was featured in Rolex advertising, and Gleitze went on to become Rolex's first testimonial. She wore the watch for the rest of her life. One of the most important Rolexes in history, it will be offered at Sotheby's Important Watches sale this November 9th in Geneva.
