Michelin Wing Sail Mobility System

Michelin is going from land to sea with its latest innovation. The French tire manufacturer has introduced an inflatable wing sail system to help decarbonize maritime shipping. Known as WISAMO, the project features a 1,076 square-foot sail with an integrated air compressor that can be can be fitted on merchant ships and pleasure craft. Its telescopic mast lifts the sails to utilize the wind to propel vessels, reducing fuel consumption and lowering CO2 emissions in the process, and retracts when it's time to enter the harbor or pass under a bridge. Created in collaboration between Michelin Research & Development and two Swiss inventors, the project's first trials are expected to begin in 2022.
