The Gypsy was built under license from Suzuki by Maruti in India for over 30 years and became one of the most popular 4x4s in the country. Based on an extended-wheelbase version of the Jimny, the Gypsy became an icon in everything from agriculture to law enforcement and the military and rally racing. Despite production stopping in 2017, design house Mightyseed is giving the Gypsy a modern makeover, keeping the distinctive flavor of the original in an updated styling package. The wide stance with minimal overhang remains intact, with the boxy styling getting a slight bit of softening while avoiding the bland crossover trap. The utility is still there too, with the rear cargo area being either open or enclosed with a cover. With the new Jimny in production, a new Gypsy seems like an idea whose time has come.
