Princess Diana's 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo S1

The People's Princess was known more for her humanitarian work than her love of automobiles. But Princess Diana eschewed the Royal Family's Rolls-Royce's and Rovers in favor of the People's Car — the Ford Escort. The Ford Escort in the UK was a far cry from the one in the US, having a history as a rally and road racer since its inception in 1968. Princess Diana had a red Escort convertible, but when the time came to upgrade, the Royal security service firmly suggested something that offered a bit more protection. Princess Diana opted for a 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo S1 — the car pictured here. A custom black exterior was arranged for the Princess, instead of the white — the only color available to the rest of the public The sporty little coupe is equipped with a five-speed manual and has a radio tucked into the glovebox, allowing Diana to keep in close contact with security. The car was returned to Ford in 1988 with 6,800 miles, and currently shows 24,961. The car goes to auction later in August 2022.
