Editor’s Note

Art & Architecture's Case Study program produced a series of legendary homes that influenced modern architecture. Of the 36 designs, Case Study House #22 has become the most recognizable mid-century modern structure in the world. The legendary glass and steel dwelling was built in 1959 for Buck and Carlotta Stahl from the designs of architect Pierre Koenig. The Hollywood Hills home catapulted to icon status after photographer Julius Shulman showcased its incredible Sunset Strip views, eventually leading to numerous features in films, televisions series, and ad campaigns. The Stahl House: Case Study House #22: The Making of a Modernist Icon retells the history of the architectural gem by the people who knew it best — the family that called it home. In the book, the now-adult Stahl children share never-before-told stories, historical information, and personal photos, along with their father's original visions for the home, sketches by Pierre Koenig, and the famous photos taken by Julius Shulman.
