Although Paul Thomas Anderson claims his 2012 film The Master isn't an exact retelling of the birth of Scientology, the similarities can't just be a coincidence. Not only do characters seem to be inspired by the religion, but one scene in particular greatly resembles their auditing process. In this video essay, Evan Puschak dissects the exchange between Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman to show how the film directly links to their Oxford Capacity Analysis, and therefore gives some insight into how the religion of Scientology functions.
