Carroll Shelby's 1964 Cobra Daytona

Carroll Shelby, the American racing driver turned designer behind the Shelby Cobra and Ford GT40 program, owned this 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. Chassis CSX2300 was built in late 1963 to take on Ferrari's dominant 250 GTO, and it delivered, playing a key role in Ford's 1965 FIA World Manufacturers' Championship win, the first time an American manufacturer claimed that title. After its factory racing days ended, the car kept competing in Japan through 1968, the only Daytona Coupe to do so, running at venues like Fuji Speedway and the Japan Grand Prix. Historian Michael Shoen spent years tracing the car through a chain of Japanese owners and ultimately brokered its sale directly to Carroll Shelby in 1975, who had it restored to 1965 racing specification. Shelby held onto the car until 1998, the only Daytona Coupe its own creator ever owned. Now, it's heading to auction.
