Basquiat Untitled 'Leonardo and His Five Grotesque Heads' Painting
Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled (Leonardo and His Five Grotesque Heads) is a bright orange, 84-inch-square canvas from 1983 that riffs on the grotesque heads of Leonardo da Vinci. Basquiat reproduces all five heads from a drawing Leonardo made around 1493, but where Leonardo gave his caricatures bodies, Basquiat reduces them to a slimy grin, an ape-like grimace and a mouth in full howl, and in one corner a pink patch reads "ALTER EGO," a reference to himself. "We see him improvising off the great Master," says Ana Maria Celis, the auction house's head of post-war and contemporary art. The painting has been out of public view in a private European collection for more than two decades and is now up for auction.
