Bizzarrini 5300 Aperta Lusso

Giorgetto Giugiaro sketched a removable roof for Bizzarrini's 5300 GT back in 1962, while he was still at Bertone. The design sat unbuilt for over sixty years. Now 10 will be hand-made to order before Bizzarrini opens the design up to additional commissions. Built around a one-piece carbon-fiber body and a bonded chassis, with roof panels light enough to lift off by hand and stow in the trunk. The 5.3-liter V8 is tuned past 400 horsepower, good for a top speed of 175 mph. It runs through a five-speed Tremec manual with a limited-slip differential, or a six-speed for anyone who wants a more relaxed cruise. The engine block itself is the same one Giotto Bizzarrini used in the 1960s. The carburetors on top are for looks only, hiding a modern fuel-injection system underneath. Inside, the dash is carved from a single piece of wood, the seats are leather, and the gear knob is finished in Italian tortoiseshell. The first Aperta Lusso commissioned is nicknamed "La Dolce Vita" by its owner, finished in a custom blue called Azzurro Gaia, named after his daughter and inspired by the waters of the Ligurian Sea.
